Dr. Sumitra Miriyala, PhD, MBA, MPH, FAHA, is a distinguished Associate Professor of Anatomy at A.T. Still University’s Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine (ATSU-KCOM). With a strong background in education, research, and leadership, she has made significant contributions to medical sciences, particularly in anatomy and cardiovascular research.
Dr. Miriyala holds multiple advanced degrees, including a PhD, MBA, and MPH, demonstrating her interdisciplinary expertise. Her commitment to scientific research is further recognized through her fellowship with the American Heart Association (FAHA), highlighting her work in cardiovascular health and disease mechanisms.
Before joining ATSU-KCOM, Dr. Miriyala served as an Assistant Professor at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in Shreveport, where she was honored with the prestigious Allen Copping Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2020. Her passion for education has continued at ATSU, where she has received recognition for her teaching excellence, including the Missouri School of Dentistry & Oral Health Outstanding Teacher Award.
Beyond her role as an educator, Dr. Miriyala is dedicated to fostering student research. In 2025, she was selected for the Society of Science Advocates Program, a prestigious initiative that supports student research and competition engagement. Her mentorship efforts reflect her commitment to guiding students toward academic and professional success in STEM fields.
Her research interests are broad, with a focus on mitochondrial retrograde signaling in cardiovascular diseases. She has also contributed to studies on airway management and oxygen carriers, underscoring her diverse scientific expertise.
