I am philosopher of science specializing in the life sciences. My research concentrates on a variety of conceptual issues in biology, including function in genomics, reductionism in protein folding and development, criteria of adequacy for explaining complex developmental and evolutionary phenomena, and how concepts accomplish more than categorization in research programs. I use a combination of approaches, including collaboration with scientific practitioners and historical investigation, to analyze developmental biology, evolutionary biology, evo-devo, functional morphology, molecular biology, genetics, and paleontology, with special attention to epistemic challenges arising from interdisciplinarity.
